The alert will come through even if your device is set to silent mode\, which is an important feature of the system designed to ensure people receive warnings in genuine emergencies. \nWhy is this test happening?\nThe Emergency Alerts system serves a crucial purpose in keeping the public safe. It’s used to warn people when there’s a danger to life nearby\, including severe weather events like storms or flooding. Since the first national test in April 2023\, the system has sent five real alerts during major storms when lives were genuinely at risk. \nRegular testing ensures the system continues to work correctly and reaches as many people as possible when it’s needed most. Just like testing smoke alarms or practising fire drills\, these tests help ensure the system will work effectively during a real life-threatening emergency. \nWill this affect schools and workplaces? \nSince the test is scheduled for 3pm on a Sunday\, most schools will be closed. However\, it’s worth noting that if any educational activities or events are taking place\, phones will still receive the alert. The timing has been carefully chosen to minimise disruption to most people’s daily routines\, though some weekend activities may experience brief interruptions. \nThe alert itself lasts only about 10 seconds\, so any disruption should be minimal. The government has designed the timing to balance the need for comprehensive testing with reducing inconvenience to the public. \nWhat will happen on your device? \nCompatible smartphones and tablets will display the alert message on screen\, make the distinctive siren sound\, and vibrate. The sound is designed to be attention-grabbing and will override your normal volume settings. This ensures the alert can reach you even if your phone is on silent or you’re in a noisy environment. \nNot all devices will receive the alert. Older phones or those not connected to 4G or 5G networks may not be compatible with the system. You can find more detailed information about device compatibility at gov.uk/alerts. \nHow can you prepare for emergencies? \nBeyond the alert system itself\, there are practical steps everyone can take to be more prepared for emergencies. The government provides comprehensive guidance at gov.uk/prepare\, covering everything from creating emergency supply kits to making family communication plans. \nThe Emergency Alerts system represents an important tool for keeping communities safe\, and this test helps ensure it will be ready when we need it most. SUMMARY:Prestow Woods - plans for the autumn and winter and volunteer dates
DESCRIPTION:We have plans to do more this autumn and winter to further improve the biodiversity in Prestow Woods. We will be running some volunteer sessions to help make them happen.\n\n\n\n\nWe need to remove invasive Privet and Ivy from some clearings to provide the space for a greater variety of plants (in line with advice from Avon Wildlife Trust).\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFollowing on from work last year\, and further advice from Avon Wildlife Trust\, we will have more of the non-native Holme Oak trees felled. These are a broad leaved evergreens that cut out so much light that nothing grows underneath them.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will need to move felled timber and cuttings to clear the ground and to create dead hedges and wildlife refuges.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will also need to plant some trees to replace those we lost this summer and to diversify some clearings.\n\n\n\n\nVolunteering sessions\n\n\nWe will be trying a new approach to the timing of volunteer sessions. Based on the successful approach used by other organisations\, we will try using a fixed pattern of days and times in the hope that it helps people with their planning to get involved.\n\n\nFor the rest of this year we will run volunteer sessions on the 1st and 3rd Thursday afternoons and the 4th Saturday morning of the month.

DESCRIPTION:Cantiamo’s ethereal Autumn programme\, ‘Seasons of the Soul’\, follows the human condition through new life to love\, longing and hope of heaven\, and features beautiful a cappella music spanning the 16th to the 21st centuries by Byrd\, Purcell\, Stanford\, Lauridsen\, Gjeilo\, Tavener and more. \nThe concert will take place in All Saints’ Church\, Wrington on Sunday 5th October at 6.30pm. \nEntry will be free but generous donations towards the upkeep of this lovely church would be appreciated. \nCantiamo\, conducted by Jeremy Martin\, are a sixteen voice auditioned choir with a reputation for performing music of the highest quality.
