Wedding of
Elspeth Crowe and Jason O'Rourke

All Saints' Church, Saturday, 22nd July, 2000

The sun shone and it was a beautiful summer day on 22nd July for the first wedding at All Saints' Church for the new millennium.

Sadly the Rector Noël Hector was ill but Roy Hickes from Redhill stood in
and officiated at the marriage of Elspeth Crowe and Jason O'Rourke.

They needed a licence from the Archbishop of Canterbury as they had
not been back in the Parish of Wrington for a full three weeks.

They are living in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia,
where they are both teachers at the International School.

            Father and Bride

Elspeth's parents - Angela and Neal Crowe live at the Old Bakehouse in The Triangle.

Jason and his family - the O'Rourkes - come from Norfolk, and he met Elspeth when they were teaching in
Kensington & Chelsea.

the Old Bakehouse

So Elspeth and her proud father walked to the church through masses of white marguerite daisies lining the archway of the Old Bakehouse, across the specially cleaned Triangle which was free of cars and full of flowers from the neighbours who came out to wish them well.

Top hats and long dresses filled the churchyard which must be one of the best tended in England.

Strong hymns, including Hills of the North Rejoice and the Battle Hymn of the Republic, with a trumpet solo from Richard, were sung by the Choir and congregation.

Sue Clark the organist could not have been more in her element with tunes such as "Zambezi" to echo the African theme to the wedding.

The ancient custom of the village children tying up the lychgate
until money was paid to open the gate was honoured
as a joyous peel of bells was rung.

The Bridal Party walked back along Station Road at a moment in time when no cars came by.

Then a receiving line into the garden for festivities in the marquee and finally a departure for the honeymoon.
