Wrington Village Journal
Editorial
April

It is beginning to seem as though hardly a week goes by without yet another well-liked and respected local personality departing this life. Most recently, as I am sure many of you are aware already, we have lost Ken Collins, Ken Schroeder and Philippa Perks.

One of the drawbacks of my job as Editor is that I often get to hear about such sad events when the Village Journal deadline has passed, leaving me powerless to respond to such news until the following issue. So it was when I heard the sad news about Philippa Perks, friend, one-time gardening correspondent of the Village Journal, and one of the most widely loved and respected members of our community.

I have been given a superb combined obituary and tribute to Philippa, and her husband Oliver, who died not long before her, in
November, and you will find it on page. There is also a fine obituary of Ken Collins on page.

Following my editorial in last month’s issue, we have received several offers from people interested in taking on managing the distribution of the Village Journal. Within the next few months we should be able to pass the job on to its next incumbent. Thank you all for your responses: it does go to show how much people value these little blue booklets.

                                                                                      Guidelines for contributors

1 Although I am prepared to type very short items, I feel that it is really up to contributors to find a friend to type up longer pieces if they are unable to do so themselves.

2 If you email me, please don’t embed photos or logos in your text. Send them as separate attachments, and at the highest resolution you can manage. Some of you might be astonished at how dull and dowdy glowing colour images on computer screens become when they are reduced in size, changed to black and white, and printed on paper.

3 For all normal submissions about the everyday events and activities of clubs and institutions around our villages, one page of the Journal ought to be sufficient space. That’s approximately 400-420 words. So please exercise moderation; as Editor I have to try to be fair and make room for everyone else’s pieces as well as yours. Excessively long articles may have to be reduced, either in length, or font size, or both.
