Broad Street Wrington Website
Visitors' Book Entries

Since the website started we've been receiving some fascinating feedback from readers in different parts of the world,  and indeed it was one of them who suggested it would be interesting to be able to read  what other people had said. Hence what follows - most recent first. There's also the Schmoose page.

It's the website's normal policy not to publish e-mail addresses of correspondents for security reasons. If you wish to make contact, e-mail the website, and it will be passed on.

Norman Owen (80+)- 18th October 2014

I have just come across your article on tying church gates. I was talking to a friend, 80yrs old, about when we tied the church gates at weddings. We lived in a small village in Lancashire and we used to tie the gates, and the best man had to throw a handful of pennies over the gate for us to open it. I had not heard of this custom anywhere else till I read your article. Google does come in handy, especially when old timers are reminiscing about the old times.

The church in question is St. James church, Brindle and the year, if I remember righ,t would be around 1942 onwards till I left school at 14. I don't know if the practice is still carried on. I also blew the organ for weddings, for which I was paid 9 pence, (old money).

[I] lived in Wrington 40 years. [

[I would] love to be able to access web addresses.

[
Anne - good to hear from you again. A number of people have understandably not wanted their e-mail addresses published for fear of receiving more spam. The website, therefore, early on adopted the policy of not giving out e-mail addresses without permission (some people actually give such permission when they write to the Schmoose page, for example).

When people ask about getting in touch with someone, we forward their e-mail to the other person, and leave it up to them. The only problem is they may have changed their e-mail address without letting the website know - so, if this applies to anyone reading this, please send your updated address, you may have an old friend wanting get in touch ! - Ed

Clair Bos - Wrington, 3rd August, 2007

I really love this website. It is very useful especially as we are relatively new to the village. It is most informative about village life, organisations, the history of Wrington and much. I look at the website almost daily and always find something of interest on the site. I especially like reading the church notices on the website. It is great to see all the new pages and items that have been added since I first started looking at last summer when we came to Wrington.

I do think a hatches, matches and dispatches column would be welcomed. Perhaps we could have pictures with some of the notices if people are willing to post their family photos.

I write many letters to friends and family overseas and often find it very useful to send links to the Wrington website. It gives people a good idea of what life is like for us and proves how lucky we are to have landed in this lovely place. Thank you very much for this great website.

I love the site ... came upon it researching my husband's family. The CHALLENGER branch seems to have originated in Wrington in the latter half of the 18th century. We only know that Mary CHALLENGER, born about 1778, married Robert Currey in Bristol in 1798 ... that's as far as that story goes right now!

[I am] interested in more about the personal life of "John Locke". Marriages, if any, children if any, where he liked to live, what about his brothers, their families. His genealogy. Was he ever in America. What towns. Whom he may have visited.

[See report of the John Locke tercentenary events in Wrington, especially Dr Andrew Woodfield's talk about him. At least some of these questions are answered there. Go either to the webarchive index page (events of 2004), or the Locke birthplace icon on the Homepage - Ed]

I am extremely interested in local history, archaeology and metal detecting.
I logged onto your website a couple of months ago and there was an article about detecting which I found very interesting, especially the information about Roman occupation in the area.

I was intending to contact the gentleman but his article has been removed from your website. [Actaully, it's still there - you can reach it either by the icon on the Village Archive index page, or under 'metal detecting' in the Search Page list (button on Homepage) - Ed]
Last year I found a hoard of 125 Roman coins in the Gordano valley. 95 of the coins are currently with the British Museum being identified. I would love to meet the gentleman as it is obvious that he is a mine of information on the subject and I don't really know anyone who has the same passion as myself.

Would it be possible to give me a contact name and number? [Done - Ed]

I would very grateful for any help you can give me.

Charles Young - Manchester - 1st September, 2002
My Grandfather, also Charles Young is shown on the 1881 census to have either been born or lived in Wrington sometime after his birth in about 1872. His mother Sarah Young, maiden name unknown, married my great grandfather, George Young, she gives her origin as Wrington also on that census. At that time they appeared to have moved to Dial Hill in Clevedon.

I think your website is excellent, especially for people like myself who have ancestors from Wrington. You do a great service to people and the site does you credit. The village looks beautiful, Many thanks.

I stumbled across the WRINGTON site purely by accident;- pure serendipity indeed.

Although my father died two years ago, my mother is still very much with us and has many fond memories of Wrington - the Church, the Choral Society , playing the role of Hannah More in a pageant etc etc.

She will be delighted to learn of your site and, being a keen net surfer herself (at the age of 85) will soon be paying a visit.

Apart from stimulating my own recollections, it will-like nothing else could- give my own, very Australian, offspring some idea of the place where "The Old Man" spent some of his youth.

[see Philip's Schmoose page entry - Ed]

What a wonderful trip down memory lane. VG Stores, Buglers Off-Licence, Village Newsagents, Richards Garage and Stores and much more! I don't get home as much as I would like and this site made me feel as if I was there. I found the messages in the visitor's book very interesting especially as I recognised some of the names e.g.Pauline and Christine Mellet with whom I went to school! I shall certainly be visiting often. Keep up the good work!

Errin Walker - Castalia, Iowa, USA

John Organ - East Wellow, Romsey, Hants
My Great, Great, Great Grandfather Reuben Organ lived in the village and is buried in the church. I believe that he and his family lived at Beam Mill. I visited the village last June with my brother for the first time and found it extremely interesting to visit the place where my ancestors lived over 200 years ago. I learned that someone who must have been a distant relation of mine, also related to Reuben lived in the village until his death a few years ago. I thought the website was of an excellent standard for a village of this size.

 David Peerless -
Rosemary Hodges sent me a couple of back issues of the Village Journal and I decided to look up the webpage. I was delighted to see several photos that I well remembered from my two-year stay in the village, about thirty years ago, when I taught in the school.

At that time there were great plans for a new school so it was amusing to see the same school in place and know that lunch is being still served in the same room where I taught
for my first year. (I recall the smell of fish filling the room in the period between the containers being delivered and lunch time.)

The second year I had the first portable classroom, which was set up in the playground and, we were assured, was only temporary.

I enjoyed seeing several familiar names in the Village Journal and send my best wishes to everyone who was in the village during my stay.

Barry Johnson - Pickering, Ontario, Canada

Jude Tomlinson - Auckland, New Zealand
"We've lived in Wrington for 12 years. We left 8 weeks ago to live in Auckland for a year. We still have a house in Wrington and my husband's company Architen is still there. I looked at this site when it was first started and thought it was a great idea. It has progressed alot since then and is a brilliant way of keeping up to date with what's going on. We missed the village fete for the first time this year so it was lovely to see photos of it. "

 Issy Plunkett - Tasmania

Internet cafe of Xiamen Airport, China waiting for a delayed flight back to Shanghai.
Thank you for all the effort to create this site.

PS: How about installing a webcam in Broad St.?"

[My ambition - just waiting for free internet telephone lines ! Ed.]

Neil Dawkins - Undy, Monmouthshire
"I lived in Ropers Lane from 1957-1975. I was born in Germany and moved with my parents to Wrington when I was 3. I did not go to the local schools and left when I got married.
I played football for the village and captained the youth team and was on the commitee for a number of years. I also played cricket for the 1st team.

My last visit to the village was 2 years ago to attend Arthur Clements funeral."

 Megan Campbell - Wales
"I'm really impressed with the site, it's an excellent representation of Wrington and gives a strong sense of the friendliness and closeness of the community. My mum, Miche Campbell (see the photos of Timegate and One O'clock From the House!) lives in Wrington and although I technically live in Wales, at university, I am glad to consider Wrington my home. This website is a good way for me to remember some of the happy times I have had there."

Belinda Kelly (Hodges) - East Barnet, Herts
"I lived in the village until I went away to University aged 18. My parents still live in the village so I visit often. Most people know my mother, Rosemary Hodges."

Yvonne Spratt (Chard) - Mauku, Pukekohe, Auckland, New Zealand
"We have just spent a few hours perusing your web page. What a great website.
I lived in Wrington from my birth in 1954 until 1972 when I left to live in New Zealand. [Hope the website encourages] contacts of people interested in Wrington Village history/stories, that could maybe be published into a book form. My father has lots to share of his memories of Wrington which would make interesting reading.

Ian Hogg - Newent, Glos
"The site was mentioned by a Wrington resident on Classic FM programme. I did not live in Wrington.   Was Mobile Youth Worker for Somerset Education.  Commenced Youth Club in village 1967.  I had a very enjoyable year working with (then!) many great young people of Wrington.   I still have a tankard inscribed by the club, when I left towards the end of 1968.  Great web site.   But then Wrington did everything well, even thirty years ago!!   Best wishes"

Jacq Parkes - Sydney, Australia
"I did enjoy seeing the daffodils and will visit again to hopefully see other seasonal photos. We don't notice the seasons change so clearly here in Sydney. The surfers pad past my house all year round!"

Pauline Osborn (née Mellett) - Langley B.C. Canada
"Absolutely first class.  No suggestions.
I have just got back from a lovely visit home.  The pictures of the daffs a perfect reminder of my visit.  Picked up my own copy of Wrington book.  Shame it wasn't longer I really enjoyed it.  Great to see old friends again.  Look forward to another visit later in the year.
It was great to see photos of my sister Peta Meadows thanks to Mrs Hodges."

Ros Koch (née Avery) - Cape Town, RSA
"I am really most impressed by the whole website - there's lots to browse through, so much so that I feel I ought not make any suggestions now in case my recommendation has already been acted upon and I've not yet discovered it!

Perhaps the "schmoose" page could have a slightly different lay out to make it easier to read - maybe so that just one message shows at a time. (I got a bit confused with the two columns!) [Consider it done ! Ed]

And perhaps there could be a notice board for people to advertise their needs and offers?
(Not that I want to take any business away from Mr. Birch at the Post Office!)
[If anyone wants this service, it can become part of the News page - like the job advert - Ed]
Thanks very much - I really love the idea of being kept in touch with Wrington, whilst I'm so far away from home!"

Andrea Stott - London, UK
"Upto age of 18. Went to the primary school then churchill comp.  I was born in the house my parents still live in on School Road."

Have lots of good memories of childhood in Wrington and really enjoyed your site. Will tell other ex Wringtonians living out here about it"

Helen Holtby - Bristol
Learned of site from "uncle George in New Zealand .. When I was Five I lived with my Gran and went to the local school briefly. It was in 1974 or there abouts. I have some happy memories of going down the "wreck" as we called it. Thank you for putting together this web. Its really nice to see the community and the beauty of Wrington."

Uwe Jahnke - Bad Arolsen, Mengeringhausen, Germany
"I stayed in Wrington twice for only a few weeks in case of a pupil exchange between Bristol and Hannover. Now I am vicar of a protestant parish in Hessen (Germany). I am glad to see Wrington again by this way and wish you all good feedbacks and joy for your work."

Pauline Osborn (née Mellet .Lawrence Rd ) Langley, British Columbia, Canada
"I was born and raised in Wrington and although after I married I came to Canada I still call it home. I am fortunate to be able to return home for visits on a regular basis.
Last year my trip coincided with the W.I. slide show 40 years in Wrington.  A lovely evening of memories and familliar faces.
The pictures  you have included show what a really beautiful village Wrington is. Canada is a beautiful place to live but there really is no place like home  .... I love the pictures of the village."

Bill Crook - Cambridge, New Zealand
Learned of site from brother Alistair. "I was Born in Bridgwater in 1943 Moved to Wrington 1945 Immigrated to New Zealand in 1963. I would like to contact anyone from the village who were there during my childhood."

George Crook (again !)
"Must say it was an absolute thrill to me travelling in cyberspace, to see Wrington school once again. Been telling everyone here about it. Clearly remember my first day there almost as if it were yesterday, 4 Nov.1940 !

Both my nieces & granddaughter have visited Wrington recently so guess Kiwis are not as rare as they once were.

All the very best & thanks for your effort in getting this site up & running. If you learn of any Wringtonian visiting our City of Sails and who would like a look around perhaps you'd let me know."

Alistair Crook - Hamilton New Zealand
Learned of the site from George Crook
"I was born in Wrington in 1937 and was Christened in the All Saints Church. I attended the village school until I left to go to Churchil Secondary School. On leaving school, I worked for the late Ted Owens at Stepstones Farm, until leaving for New Zealand in 1958.

I visited Wrington while on holiday in England in 1996 and found it still as enchanting and beautiful as I remember it in my childhood. It was lovely to be able to wander through the woods and enjoy the beautiful bluebells.
We were also privileged when walking down Wrington Hill to hear the church bells ringing out in the distance. Sadly I wasn't there long enough to enjoy village life as I remember it.

My wife also accompanied me on my visit and was impressed with the village. She teaches over here and is interested in making contact with the village school with an eye to establishing e-mail communication between her students and students at Wrington School. She thought it would be a good way to maintain links with the village and enabling students in New Zealand the opportunity to learn about village life in England, as well as giving the students in Wrington an opportunity to correspond with students in New Zealand.

Bronagh teaches at Marian School,  which is a full primary school - with students from Y1 - Y8. Her class is a Y6 class; should the school wish to correspond with students at other levels she could also arrange it.

We look forward to visiting your site on a regular basis."

Philippa Golding - Wrington
"We have lived here for 7 years .. My husband and I were married in All Saints in May 1995. I think that this web site is great and have passed on the address to friends in Canada who will be very interested.
Would love to see some more up to date photo's from the church tower as well as the old ones. (and some of the Golden Lion to make my husband feel at home!)"

[Going up the tower with camera when weather improves ! - Ed.]

Suki d'Angremond - Lake Jackson, Texas, USA
"I didn't have much time for reading through this time but I really enjoyed what I read. This web site is an excellent link to the community, old and new and I will find the time to come back and have a more detailed look through.

It's also nice for the children to see where Grandma and Grandpa are living and what their friends might be doing !"

Russell Filby - Nailsea
"My mother Christine Filby née Mellet was born in Wrington in 1946 and lived there till married in 1967, My grandparents Olive and Ernie Mellett live in lawrence road.

I really enjoyed the site and will pass the link on to others. It would be nice to be able to view coments left in the guestbook by others."

Dave Garland - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
"I was born and raised in Bristol and have visited Wrington during trips back to see family. I was there in July '99 and stayed with my sister in Orchard Close (Elizabeth Lacey). I have always admired the Village and especially the church and also enjoyed a beer or two at the locals.

What a great idea to put yourself on the Web!"

Suki d'Angremond (second message)
"I was born in the village in 1968. What about a message board for old and new inhabitants?

I took alot longer to read the contents this time and I am impressed by the content.
I have added the site to my list of favorites so that in the future I can get to the site immediately.

My oldest son is also taking an interest in reading the pages as well and suggests a youth section for the kids of the village?
