After a narrow defeat at Clutton on the opening day of the season it was good to win and get some points on the board for the new look team. Due to some bad cracks on the pitch at the rec’ we’d had to switch this fixture from home too away. Thanks must go the Ashton & Blackwell for staging this game at such short notice.
As the lads from Wrington Redhill entered the Lancer Scott Ltd stadium they knew a game against the current league leaders Ashton & Backwell wasn’t going to be a stroll on this glorious summer evening.
The game started and the visitors were on it from the get-go, that disappointing defeat to Clutton still fresh in the players minds seemed to motivate them. The instruction from the new management team of Phil Baker & Scott Campbell was to be a bit more forward thinking in their approach and it seemed to have the desired effect.
During large parts of the first half Wrington Redhill were always a threat going forward and looked assured at the back whilst controlling the midfield, as the first half was ending it was them who were looking most likely to score with Luke Weeks going close on a couple of occasions. Half time 0-0.
As the second has got underway it was much the same as the first, Wrington were looking lively going forward with Jack Hutchings and Harrison Campbell causing the Ashton & Backwell defence all sorts of problems.
Ashton & Backwell did pose a threat to Wrington’s back line with their lively left winger looking most likely to create for the home team. Wrington Redhill’s midfield trio Cam Milkins, Lew Milkins and Jake Marshman were relentless during the whole game, offering defensive cover for the team whilst being able to pose a threat going forward.
They did come close to opening the scoring with an acrobatic effort from the returning Josh Skuse, a speculative overhead kick sailed just over the crossbar. Wrington were now looking most likely to score, and they did just that, a superb ball from the captain Connor Harding-James was latched onto by the impressive Jack Hutching’s to Lob the keeper, The ball seemed to stay in the air for an age, eventually hitting the back of the net. Ashton & Backwell 0-1 Wrington Redhill.
Wrington Redhill continued to defend superbly for the remainder of the game to secure their first 3pts of the season with a fully deserved win.
Standout performers on the night were both full backs Sam Fletcher and Jenson Backhouse, but the Man of the match chosen by the supporter’s go’s to………………Rob Hannah-for another solid performance between the sticks. Well done, Rob.
