🦌 Bambi’s Homecoming: A Somerset Icon Finds New Ground
In the heart of Shepton Mallet, a familiar figure has returned—not to the rooftop where it once stood sentinel, but to a new home that honours its legacy. The Babycham Bambi, a 15-foot golden deer that once crowned the Showerings Cider Mill, has been lovingly restored and now resides at Kilver Court, newly christened Babycham Gardens.
For decades, the statue was more than an advertisement—it was a beacon of Somerset’s innovation and charm. Invented by Francis Showering in 1953, Babycham revolutionised the drinks industry, becoming the first alcoholic beverage to be advertised on British television. Its sparkling perry and playful mascot captured the spirit of post-war celebration, and for many, the sight of Bambi atop the cider mill was a symbol of local pride.
But in recent years, the statue vanished from view, sparking whispers and wistful speculation. Had it been retired? Sold? Forgotten?
Not at all.
In 2021, Brothers Drinks Co. Ltd—founded by the Showering family themselves—reacquired the Babycham brand and undertook a full refurbishment of the statue. Repainted in “Showering Blue” by local artisans and given a fresh lease of life, Bambi was unveiled at Kilver Court during a festive pop-up event, raising funds for the National Bereavement Partnership.
“It was high time our well-loved statue received some love,” said Matthew Showering. “We’re proud to bring Babycham back to its roots and share it with the community once again.”
Though no longer perched on the cider mill roof, Bambi’s new home is no less meaningful. Kilver Court, once the Showering family’s ancestral residence, now serves as a public garden and heritage site—a place where locals and visitors alike can reconnect with Somerset’s sparkling past.
