The Rotary Club of Wrington Vale were proud to donate a cheque for £2,500 to Phil Cocks of the Great Western Air Ambulance charity this week. The club’s raised a significant portion of this donation from our very successful Jazz in the Orchard event at the end of July. This was topped up from the “President’s Fund” from our outgoing President, John Alvis, who has now passed over the responsibility of steering the club over the next 12 months into the safe hands of Shipham resident, Nigel Oakley.

The club’s next big fundraising event is the Mendip Family Festival over the last weekend of August.

We also have a very interesting speaker lined up for our monthly Breakfast Meeting on Wednesday, September 3rd at 8.00 to 9.00am. Associate Professor Martin How of Bristol University will give a short talk on “Seeing the world through different (marine) eyes.

Martin’s talks are fascinating, especially how we can learn from marine creatures and develop technologies that utilise the special vision capabilities of creatures such as CuttleFish and Mantis Shrimp. Martin’s talk will be on how vision works in Marine Animals and how they make use of unusual properties of light to communicate, hunt and avoid being hunted. We are privileged in being able to bring such amazing experts to these talks and we are very grateful to Martin for volunteering to talk to us.

Breakfast talks are open to everyone so message if you would like more details, or just turn up on September 3rd at the Alpine Lounge, Mendip Activity Centre (dry ski slope) in Sandford. It will be good to see you.
