From Chris Armand, 30th January, 2008

Hello. Just seen the article on John Vane, my Name is Chris Armand, my grandfather was called Christopher Vere Vane he died in London in 1972 aged 84 .

My grandmother would tell me a story that he was really Lord Barnard, Earl of Durham (?) and a Duke and that I would one day inherit.

I never really took any notice but recently my cousin has been tracing my family tree and has found some connections . I do remember an illuminated family tree which is now lost which went back as far as the Black Prince.

It would be interesting to talk to you.

By all means give Chris my email address, though I can't promise to elevate him to the Peerage, of course!

I think the title he seeks is long-since extinct, but it'll probably still be interesting to chat with him by email. I've definitely come across the "de Vere Vane" name in my travels. I think one of them was in the first funeral car at Harry Vane, 4th Duke of Cleveland's funeral in 1891, if I remember the article in the Bath Chronicle correctly, and I believe he did indeed go on to become 'Baron Barnard' - a title which still exists (though it appears to have a secured line of succession and heirs apparent already, he'll be sad to see!)

I think the earldom would have been Darlington rather than Durham. That, like the dukedom of Cleveland died out with the 4th Duke (and 6th Earl) in 1891. The succession caused much research and litigation, so it is unlikely that there were any legitimate heirs missed at the time. That is, all legitimate male descendants of the 1st Duke and his grandfather, the 1st Earl, had died out. There were male descendants of the 1st earl's father and the highest ranking of these became the 9th Lord Barnard, whose descendants still occupy Raby Castle, I believe.

One of the 1st Earl's sisters (Anne) married Charles Hope-Vere in 1745 and was divorced in 1757. That is the only "Vere" I've come across, but a thorough search may well reveal others.
